To Sesame Street!!
One of my all time favorite shows, even today as a 30 year old, I learned so much from SS. I learned how to use music as a way to remember things, how to speak with my hands through sign language, how to be silly, and to always question things.
One of my favorite songs from the show is when Lefty the Letter Salesman tries to get Ernie to buy an O…I have a soft spot in my heart for Bert and Ernie. They remind me of my sisters a lot, especially the fish clip.
I got to meet a Muppeter a few years ago when Carroll Spinney was going around promoting his new book. Because we got there so early (I was wicked excited) I was first in line to get my book signed. It was awesome…while he didn’t bring Big Bird, Oscar was there in a duffel bag and quite angry about it.

I regret not being able to ever meet Jim Henson, but like a lot of people my age, I kinda feel like I did. You could see his character through the Muppets he controlled and all different types of his personality, especially when he was paired with Frank Oz. A great show and a wonderful thing for kids to continue to be able to watch. Who can get through the clip of Big Bird learning the Mr. Hooper died without getting teary eyed?

At work, we have some maps up and try to encourage people to mark where they are from with pins. At the end of every week, we take the pins down and “reset” the maps. I took down the old maps the other day because certain areas (like Hartford, CT and the Netherlands) were completely obliterated, but it was really interesting to see the distribution of all the pins. Here are some pictures (and proof, if you’ve ever needed it, that people come from every continent to visit Boston):

Visitors from the South Pacific

Visitors from Europe, Asia Minor, Northern Africa

Visitors from Africa
It will be interesting to see how the map morphs and changes over the next few weeks as most of our visitors will be from New England and Western Europe. Most of our cruise ships are carrying people from the New York/New England area or Britain to Canada and back again, so probably fewer South Africans or people from the South Pacific, but who knows!

So, I made it up and down the mountain without falling down once, which is actually quite an accomplishment for me.
The week began with some beer:

A sampler from Moat Mountain, lovely place to eat and lovely place to stay about 20 miles away from Mt. Washington and nice comfy beds.

Larry came along for the ride and the weather reminded him of traveling on the ocean with all the fog and rain.

The last of the snow from the winter…it wasn’t as impressive as last year since it was all gloomy when we went by in the morning. If we had come down the same trail (which we should have) the pictures would have been much better.

We made it up here in fairly record time for me. 4 miles in just about 4 hours…with the extra weather and some issues with breathing and a large group of people standing in the middle of the trail, so annoying.

A quick picture after we hit the summit going down Lion’s Head.

You can see how different the weather can be in just a few hours. It was lovely on the way down from the summit.

Remember, kiddies! Be Ice Smart! And remember to scream and wave your hands in the air while running away from large ice boulders.

I love $3 pint glasses!

But orgasmic, organic berries are even better!

Four times up and cloudy skies each time. I actually had some clear skies once while almost to the top, but they went away fairly quickly. Mount Washington spends about 90% of its year in some sort of cover: fog, clouds, snow, sleet, rain. It looks like this time will be no different with showers predicted for the morning of our hike.
Hopefully by the time this summer is over, I will have two more summit pictures to show. One will be a true summit (in my mind) because I’ll walk up myself. The other one will be aided by a car ride (really a truck ride) up the Auto Road. As my birthday present to myself, I have booked myself a weekend at the Mount Washington Observatory. Not only do I get to be geeky and learn about weather, I get to sleep overnight on the summit. How cool is that? I would rather the clear skies for that because I am definitely bringing both my cameras (just got the new one) to try and take pictures of the stars!

Mount Washington stands at 6,288 feet (1,917 m) and is the highest point of both the White Mountain’s 4000-footers and of New Hampshire. It is known for having incredibly wild weather and holding the record for the highest wind gust measured at the Earth’s surface, 231 mph on April 12, 1934. Before Europeans arrived, it was known as Agiocochook.
First seen in 1524 by Giovanni da Verrazzano, it was first ascended in 1642 by Darby Field (for whom Mt. Field is named for). The Crawford Path was laid out in 1819, providing access to the summit. In 1861, a stagecoach road was placed for the summit (which was turned into the Mount Washington Auto Road) and in 1869 the Cog Railway was created.
One of the silliest things I’ve done in my life is to pick up a book entitled “Not Without Peril”; I did this on the first night of a 20 mile hike through the White Mountains and was fascinated by the ways that people have died on Mt. Washington. Some were quite simple, people wandering off trail or trying to summit in storms…other people have died in very unique ways, the ones who died by drowning caught my attention. Apparently, someone has also been murdered on the mountain in 2001.
I would strongly suggest not picking the book up before going on a hike through the Whites, but it is a good read overall.

23 hours…that is how much time I just recently spent in New York City with the sole intent of getting myself into a taping of The Colbert Report. I had been to a taping of The Daily Show earlier this year and had jumped on tickets for TCR when I saw them available. Unfortunately, my boyfriend couldn’t go because of work training so one of my co-workers came with me.
The show was fabulous. Stephen is a sweet guy and extremely funny. The people running the show were mostly good to great. The only problem was that I didn’t have enough time to go see all the other stuff I wanted to see! Always a problem.
A picture of the stage set… I got yelled at for taking this photo by one of the security guys, but I love it anyways:

Can anyone figure out what the middle part of this graffiti is? I think it could be a spaceship or perhaps a mutant lobster?

Today I did a few new things.
1. I went to a National Park I’ve never been to, Saugus Iron Works. It was quite fun because I got a personalized tour, saw some frogs and swallows, had a nail made just for me, and almost caught on fire. How great, right?
2. I took a lot of pictures…while that isn’t new, it was of stuff I haven’t taken pictures of before. So that counts.

3. I had a tire blow out on me while going a bit over the speed limit. No one at the tire shop can figure out how I did this because the damage is to the edge of the tire rather than on the tread itself. It came off quite easily for a tire and we had to replace them soon anyways so we are halfway there.

Oh well…tomorrow I have a wedding that I am participating in. One of my fake relatives is getting hitched and it will be a fantastic event. Chocolate, wine, love, and family…you really can’t go wrong!

We made it back alive and without any fights!
I am not a great teacher for skiing as I had to remember how to actually ski, so every once in a while I would tell him a new nugget as it popped back into my head from the back of my brain.
Overall, the mountain was pretty good. A few people were real big idiots, 2 snowboarders who were just lying across the steepest part of the main trail and a woman and her daughter standing at the end of the ramp for the ski lift. We actually ran into them because they wouldn’t move.
However, ending the day with a warm waffle dipped in maple syrup was a stroke of brilliance! So tasty and hot and sugary. Just what I needed.

Flower
This is what happens when I get bored at work and happen to have my camera
Got to watch the inauguration yesterday with about 20 other federal employees. It wasn’t a great feed, kept pixelating but the sound was just fine. I also finally got acces to the internet, but possibly not to the company email. If it isn’t one thing, its another.
Tomorrow, I go for an interview for my internship. It would involve working with Presidential papers and helping to create an exhibit to be on display later. Hopefully it will all come together and I’ll have my internship all put together and be able to start getting my hours done earlier than later. AND I’ll have a great project to put onto my resume, which is always nice.

Well, our little party was a success…only 1 car got lost and ended up by the airport. They were also the car that had a person slightly freak out when they went through the tunnels under the harbor and who asked every few minutes “Is that an airplane?!”
Too bad about the Patriots, though. The Jets suck.
